Hadith 564 - Bab 62 (Selflessness and Sympathy)
Chapter 1 (The Book of Miscellany)

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and said; "I am hard pressed by hunger." He (Peace be upon him) sent a word to one of his wives who replied: "By Him Who has sent you with the Truth, I have nothing except water." Then he sent the same message to another (wife) and received the same reply. He sent this message to all of them (i.e., his wives) and received the same reply. Then he (Peace be upon him) said, "Who will entertain this (man) as guest?" One of the Ansar said: "O Messenger of Allah, I will." So he took him home and said to his wife: "Serve the guest of Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him)."

Another narration is: The Ansari asked his wife: "Have you got anything?" She answered: "Nothing, except a little food for the children." He said: "Keep them busy with something, and when they ask for food put them to sleep. When the guest enters, extinguish the light and give him the impression that we are also eating." So they sat down and the guest ate and they passed the night hungry. When he came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) in the morning, he said to him, "Allah admired what you did with your guest last night."

Selon Abou Hourayra (das), un homme vint dire au Prophète (bsdl): «Je suis exténué par la faim». Il envoya demander quelque chose à l"une de ses femmes. Elle dit: «Par Celui qui t"a envoyé porteur de vérité, je n"ai rien d"autre que de l"eau». Il envoya demander à une autre de ses femmes et ce fut la même réponse jusqu"à ce qu"elles eussent toutes dit: «Par Celui qui t"a envoyé porteur de vérité, je n"ai rien d"autre que de l"eau». Le Prophète dit alors: «Qui donc veut bien donner l"hospitalité à cet homme?» Un Ansàrite dit: «Moi, ô Messager de Dieu!» Il se rendit chez lui en sa compagnie et dit à sa femme: «Reçois bien l"hôte du Messager de Dieu (bsdl)»

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said, "The food for two suffices for three; and the food for three suffices for four persons."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In Muslim, Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, "The food for one person suffices for two; the food for two suffices for four, and the food fof four suffices for eight persons."

Toujours selon lui, le Messager de Dieu (bsdl) a dit: «Le manger de deux personnes suffit à trois et le manger de trois suffit à quatre».

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Once we were on a journey with Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) when a rider came and began looking right and left. Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said, "Whoever has an extra mount should offer it to him who is without it, and whoever has surplus food should give it to him who has nothing;" and he continued mentioning other properties until we thought that none of us had any right to surplus of his own property.

[Muslim].

Abou Sa"id Al Khoudri (das) rapporte: «Pendant qu"on était en voyage avec le Prophète (bsdl), voilà qu"arriva un homme sur sa monture. Il promena son regard à droite et à gauche. Le Messager de Dieu (bsdl) dit alors: «Que celui qui a encore de la place sur sa monture en fasse profiter celui qui n"a pas de monture; et que celui qui a un excédent de provisions en donne à celui qui n"a aucune provision». Il continua ainsi à citer toutes les sortes de biens au point qu"il nous parut qu"aucun de nous n"avait le droit de garder pour lui ce qui excédait ses propres besoins». (Rapporté par Moslem)

Sahl bin Sa'd (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A woman brought a woven piece of cloth to Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) and said to him: "I have woven this sheet with my own hands for you to wear." He accepted it as he was in need of it. He later came out wearing it as a lower garment. Someone said: "How nice it is! Kindly give it to me." Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said, "Very well." He remained in our company for some time, then he went back, folded it and sent it to the man. The people said (to that man): "You did not do well. Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) wore it and he was in need of it, and you asked him for it when you are well aware that he (Peace be upon him) never refuses a request." He said: "I swear by Allah that I did not ask it for wearing. I asked him for it so that it might be my shroud after my death." Sahl (the narrator of this Hadith) said: And in fact it was used as his shroud.

[Al-Bukhari].

Selon Sahl Ibn Sa"id (das), une femme vint au Messager de Dieu (bsdl) avec un manteau tissé. Elle lui dit: «Je l"ai tissé de ma main pour t"en couvrir». Le Prophète (bsdl), qui en avait bien besoin, prit le manteau, l"entoura autour de ses hanches et sortit à nous. Untel dit alors: «Habille-moi-s"en, comme il est beau!» Il dit: «Oui». Le Prophète prit part à notre conseil puis rentra chez lui et fit un paquet du manteau qu"il envoya à cet homme. Les gens lui dirent: «Tu as fait là une bien vilaine chose. Le Prophète (bsdl) s"était couvert de ce manteau dont il avait vraiment besoin et voilà que tu le lui demandes, sachant bien qu"il ne déçoit aucun demandeur». Il dit: «Par Dieu, je ne le lui ai pas demandé pour m"en vêtir mais je voulais uniquement en faire mon linceul». Sahl a dit: «Ce fut effectivement ce manteau qui lui servit de linceul». Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said, "When the Ash'ariyun run short of food in the Jihad or when they are at home in Al-Madinah, they collect all the provisions they have in a sheet and then divide it equally among themselves. They are of me and I am of them."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Selon Abou Musa (das), le Messager de Dieu (bsdl) a dit: «Les Ash"arites (la tribu de Abou Musa), lorsqu"ils épuisent leurs provisions au cours d"une expédition militaire, ou bien lorsque les ressources de leurs familles deviennent rares, rassemblent ce qu"ils ont dans un seul manteau puis se le partagent à égalité. C"est pourquoi ils m"appartiennent et je leur appartiens».
