Hadith 699 - Bab 91 (Brevity in Preaching)
Chapter 2 (The Book of Good Manners)

Shaqiq bin Salamah reported: Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) used to preach to us once every Thursday. A man said to him: "O Abu 'Abdur-Rahman, we love your talk and we wish that you preach us every day." He said: "There is nothing to prevent me from doing so, but I don't lest I bore you. I follow the same method in preaching to you that Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) adopted in preaching to us for fear of boredom."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Wàil, le frère de Ibn Salama, rapporte: «Ibn Mas"ûd (das) nous faisait un sermon de rappel une fois par semaine. Quelqu"un lui dit: «O Abou "Abdurrahman! J"aurais voulu que ton prêche fût quotidien». Il lui dit: «Seule m"empêche de le faire ma crainte de votre lassitude. Je préfère espacer mes sermons comme le faisait avec nous le Messager de Dieu (bsdl) de peur de vous ennuyer».

'Ammar bin Yasir (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: I heard Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) saying, "Prolonging Salat (prayer) and shortening the Khutbah (religious talk) indicate the religious knowledge of the person. Make your Salat long and your sermon short."

[Muslim].

"Ammàr Ibn Yasâr (das) rapporte: «J"ai entendu dire le Messager de Dieu (bsdl): «Quand l"homme prolonge sa prière et abrège son sermon, c"est là un signe de sa science. Prolongez donc la prière et abrégez le sermon». (Rapporté par Moslem)

Mu'awiyah bin Al-Hakam As-Sulami (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: While I was in Salat with Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him), a man in the congregation sneezed and I responded with: 'Yarhamuk-Allah (Allah have mercy on you).' The people stared at me with disapproving looks. So I said: "May my mother lose me. Why are you staring at me?" Thereupon, they began to strike their thighs with their hands. When I saw them urging to me to remain silent, I became angry but restrained myself. When Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) concluded his Salat. I have never before seen an instructor who gave better instruction than he, may my father and mother be sacrificed for him. He neither remonstrated me, nor beat me, nor abused me. He simply said,"It is not permissible to talk during Salat because it consists of glorifying Allah, declaring His Greatness as well as recitation of the Qur'an," or he said words to that effect." I said: "O Allah's Messenger, I have but recently accepted Islam, and Allah has favoured us with Islam. There are still some people among us who go to consult soothsayers." He said, "Do not consult them." Then I said: "There are some of us who are guided by omens." He said, "These things which come to their minds. They should not be influenced by them."

Mou"âwiya Assoulami (das) rapporte: «Alors que je priais avec le Messager de Dieu (bsdl), voilà que l"un des orants étemua. Je lui dis (selon la règle de la politesse): «Que Dieu soit clément avec toi». Les gens me jetèrent des regards de réprobation. Je dis: «Malheur à moi! Qu"avez-vous à me regarder ainsi?» Ils se mirent à taper des mains sur leurs cuisses (pour me faire taire). Quand je compris qu"ils voulaient me faire taire, je me tus». Quand le Messager de Dieu (bsdl) - puisse-je lui servir de rançon ainsi que mon père et ma mère - acheva sa prière, je n"ai jamais vu avant lui, ni après lui, un instructeur meilleur que lui. Il dit tout simplement: «Durant la prière il n"est pas permis de prononcer une seule parole de ce que les gens se disent entre eux. La prière, en effet, n"est faite que pour purifier et glorifier Dieu et pour réciter le Coran». Je dis: «O Messager de Dieu! Je sors à peine de mon paganisme et voilà que Dieu nous a apporté l"Islam. Il y a encore parmi nous des gens qui consultent les devins». Il dit: «Ne les consulte plus». Je dis: «II y a parmi nous des gens qui croient encore au mauvais augure». Il dit: «C"est une simple sensation qu"ils éprouvent en eux-mêmes. Que cela ne les empêche pas de faire ce qu"ils avaient l"intention de faire». (Rapporté par Moslem)

'Irbad bin Sariyah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: One day, Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) delivered a very effective speech, as a result, eyes shed tears and hearts became softened. A man said: "O Prophet of Allah! It sounds as if this is a farewell speech, so advise us." He (Peace be upon him) said, "I admonish you to fear Allah, and to listen and obey even if a black slave has been appointed as your leader. For whoever among you lives after me will see much discord. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs who will come after me. Adhere to them and hold fast to them. Beware of Bid'ah (in religion) because every Bid'ah is a misguidance."

[Abu Da wud and At-Tirmidhi].

"Irbàd Ibn Sariya (das) rapporte: «Le Messager de Dieu (bsdl) nous a fait une fois un sermon qui remplit nos cœurs de crainte et fit couler les larmes de nos yeux». Il cita alors le Hadith 456 du chapitre 54.
